Further Updates from December 7/8 meeting

In addition to the notes below, we also discussed meeting over winter break to see each other's progress on individual projects for the gallery show as well as do some group preparation. Dates and times are still to be determined, but the group is hoping to meet two to three times. Possible dates include December 21st and the 28th.

Interested in helping out with the mural to promote the gallery show? If so, look out for an e-mail for dates and times for painting once the design is finalized.

Keep checking the blog for updates! Also, please make sure that the e-mail address we have for you is the one that you regularly check so that you can stay updated on these upcoming events.

1. ADOBE INTERACT
Please e-mail us at aigacod@gmail.com if you're interested in demonstrating a specific tool or giving a quick tutorial using an Adobe product. We need you to show us your skills!

2. ADOBE SNEAK PEEK
We viewed a video of a possible upcoming Photoshop feature that was presented at Adobe MAX. Tired of ending up with a bunch of blurred photos that you can't do anything with? Then you'd love this feature. Check it out at http://youtu.be/XLLJBfRzXIQ.

2. LOGO DESIGN
We voted on Keidy's logo for the gallery show! (See the post below this one for the logo.) Great job, Keidy! We liked all the logos that were submitted and thought that all of them had good potential for the gallery show. With a little added "darkness," we think Keidy's logo will be good to go.

3. GALLERY SHOW
Want to be in the gallery show? In order to participate, you MUST (!!!) e-mail us at aigacod@gmail.com with 3-5 of your best examples of your art. It can be anything – something you've done in class or something on your own. Please e-mail these as soon as possible to be included in the gallery show.

Hey AIGA Group!

On a bright note, Its Thanksgiving weekend and we are only left with 2 maybe 2.5 weeks of this semester. This semester seriously flew by. I know that many of us are beyond full time students along with work and other commitments. I know I am. So, I completely understand the lack of time and dedication outside of classroom/ assignments and work. But we have to cover a lot of ground work still.

Our # 1 priority before this semester ends as an AIGA group is to finalize the logo design and semi-finish the comic strip. During our winter will be given more time for the actual art work towards the gallery show. But in order for this to be successful we will have to meet during the break as well. At least one or two times. This can be discussed furthermore later on. But as if for now, please email me your 3-5 BEST works as JPGs! high resolution Jpgs. its really hard to get everyone on the same note and to meet up at the Wednesday meeting so I request everyone to send me the jpgs files along with a description of how you did it. This way I can get the work in faster and we can focus on something else.

We will also set up a google docs account on this so this will make it easier for us to share files and elaborate and please use the benefit of the blog if you want feedback on what is your BEST works' POST IT, we will post comments and suggestion up there so we can get a better idea. Also if you have an logo design done for the gallery show please post those up there too.

Lastly, E-MAIL ME YOUR STUFF OTHERWISE YOU DONT GET A SPOT IN THE GALLERY SHOW!! I NEED IT ASAP !!

An Important Update !!

Hello AIGA Group Members !!
How is everyone doing? I hope everyone is doing just great !! There are couple things I need to point out that are very important.

1) Next Wednesday we do not have classes therefore there will be NO AIGA meeting. However on our Facebook page Dan has mentioned a meeting at TGIFridays for discussing for the gallery show and upcoming projects and just to hang out. Personally I think, this would be awesome if everyone is down with it please check out the Facebook page and let us know what you think.

2) I recently had a chat with Brad Kilam for the gallery show and just to check-in if everything was ok with the proposal and to confirm our date in April. For us to get a spot for the show we need to compile (each member) between 3-4 BEST pervious work. Meaning, we need to create a cd of our best design/art work and submitted in so they can review our "capability". So, between now and November 24th please narrow down some of your best work. December 1st will we again have our meeting and that time we will compile our cd and turn it in.

PLEASE BRING YOUR DIGITALLY PIECES ON DECEMBER 1ST! IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SOMETHING FOR US, YOU WONT HAVE A SPOT IN THE GALLERY SHOW because everyone works need to be reviewed by the Brad and the Art Show team in order to be in the show.

3) We must finalize on a logo design for the Gallery show, so please bring your logos designs as well. We have a decent time from this weekend till the December 1st. We need to send a copy of the logo design (pdf. & ai files ) to both MAID and Columbia so we need to be on top of our game!

The Sketchbook Project Rules!!

Summary of rules

Everybody likes to skip this part, but we recommend you don't! We've kept it short and sweet:

If you didn't complete last year's sketchbook, we cannot accept it for this year's Project. Please sign up for the 2012 project to participate!
Your book must remain within the dimensions of 1 x 5.25 x 7.25 inches. It can open up to something wonderful (of any size), but it must fold down to the original dimensions. You are welcome to unbind, rebind or alter the book in (almost) any other way. If you want to use a thicker stock of paper, go for it, but please do not make the book larger than one-inch thick.
Your barcode must remain in place on the book – no moving or covering it. An altered or unreadable label means we have to disqualify you from the tour.
You are free and encouraged to alter, design, and work on the cover of the sketchbook!
The theme is a great starting point, but in no way is meant to be a restriction. If you feel limited by it, just loosen up and have fun. It's just a guide!
Your book must be postmarked by January 31st, 2012. No exceptions.
We do not offer refunds (including the fee for digitizing) for people who do not finish a sketchbook.
All sales are final! Please read the rules if you are unsure about signing up.
If you do not receive your sketchbook due to a shipping issue, you have until November 15, 2011, to notify us. After that date, we are unable to issue refunds or resend sketchbooks.
We reserve the right to switch sketchbook books, brands or sizes at any time without notice.

We live in the information age, where we are continually inundated with increasing amounts of data. Data can be unintelligible in raw form. Combined with principles of visual communication design, however, data can come alive. Well-presented data has the ability to speak to us, inform us and change our behavior. Data visualization requires tools of visual language and literacy, which designers have in abundance. In this webinar, we’ll learn how designers are making the invisible visible, and how pairing data and design can help businesses be more effective.

Led by moderator Callie Neylan, Angela Shen-Hsieh, CEO and founder of GroupVisual.io, will talk about how to use design to interpret data for use in decision making; and Jared Waxman of Adobe Systems will share examples of how designers and their clients can use data to improve the impact of their work.

Angela Shen-Hsieh is a partner at GroupVisual.io, a design consultancy specializing in data visualization and data-driven software user interfaces. Since graduating from the Harvard Design School, she has pursued forms of communication and information delivery that fascinate, inform and prompt people to think. She has been designing business metrics and business analytics for more than 15 years, for corporations such as Johnson & Johnson, GE, Eli Lilly and Fidelity, and for software and technology companies such as Microsoft, Sony and numerous start-ups. She has been featured in Fast Company and BusinessWeek, which named her one of “10 cutting edge designers pushing the limits of design.”

Jared Waxman is the group manager for online optimization and analytics for Adobe, a parent company of Omniture, focused on measuring and improving performance on Adobe.com, a top-30 U.S. website. Previously, he was the VP of monetization for a cloud-video company, and led Intuit’s web analytics and optimization team. He has pioneered techniques that integrate voices of customers with on-site relevant content and multivariate testing. With more than 14 years of experience, he began on the tools side as director of product management for Alexa Internet’s web measurement division, before moving to the analyst side at Amazon.com, Xilinx and Mercury (HP).

Moderator
Callie Neylan is a designer, researcher and writer who has worked in visual and interaction design for renowned design firms Gensler and Teague and media organization NPR. Callie holds an MFA in design from the University of Washington in Seattle and is currently an assistant design professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her research interests focus on the aesthetics of interaction design.

The New Web Typography_ October 6th 2011 Event

Event Overview:
Typography on the web has been handcuffed for years. In the online world, designers have been limited to a small number of “web safe” fonts. Achieving true typographic nuance has required a workaround: converting text to graphics, using Flash, or applying another various and sundry technique.

But now, all that is changing—and changing quickly. With most browsers supporting CSS @font-face, any licensed font can be used on a website and downloaded to a user’s device. This use of so-called “web fonts” has begun a revolution in typography on the web.

To get to the bottom of this revolution, we’re assembling an all-star cast of web font specialists, web designers, developers, and type designers. They’ll give an overview of web fonts, providing background on their benefits, the problems they solve, and the various options they offer designers. A panel discussion and audience questions. will follow.

Bill Davis discovered his love of type at an early age, and has spent his career working with type & typography in the design, advertising, publishing and printing industries. At Monotype Imaging, Bill is actively involved in a variety of font technology initiatives including Web fonts. One of his favorite fonts is PMN Caecilia – a robust slab serif that was chosen by Amazon for the Kindle.

Renewing AIGA Membership

Students with expiration dates between August 31 and December 31 can renew their memberships during the fall membership drive for $50. They should have received emails about the drive.
Students with 2012 expiration dates will be included in spring membership drive.

Two Meetings Decided !!

Only yesterday it was decided that AIGA meetings' are going to be held two times a week. Between Libby & I we are trying to work out the best schedule possible with the room availability and are trying to make things work as smoothly as possible. But as if for now One meeting is on (Wednesday) held in the MAC room 259 from 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm. and (Thursday) mornings as well in the same room but the time is from 8:30 am - 9:30 am.

IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT AIGA MEMBERSHIP

AIGA is in the midst of an online student membership drive. Students can join and renew online for the discounted $50 between 1st September to 30th September '11. Or you can join and renew online for $95 after 30th September '11. So you SAVE $45 if you REGISTER OR RENEW NOW. Simply go to my.aiga.org.

Hello Everyone,
For all those who couldn't make it, here is the update for meeting on Wed, 14 Sep '11...

AIGA Student Membership : Update on AIGA Student Membership - Register Now & Save $45. Click on the link to get more details.
Project 1 - INNER YOU: You can use any media to do this project. It is about illustrating your own self. You can use canvas, paper, any other media or do it digitally. Its absolutely up to you. We will take pictures & upload it on blog.
Treasurer for for AIGA at COD is Meghan.
Dzyn Bucket : We will create 3 groups for Dzyn Bucket Event. 1. Advertising - Poster, blog, fliers etc. 2. Organizing Event - Planning the event floor, recognition program at the event etc. 3. Contacting & follow-up - Make contacts for inviting speakers, for having a booth, goodies etc.
Gallery Shows : We discussed about the gallery show. We have to come up with some ideas regarding the gallery show & we are going to brainstorm some ideas in our next meeting on Wed, 21 Sep '11. We have to do this show with another college. So we are going to do it mostly with Columbia college. This show will be displayed at 3 locations : 1. At College Of DuPage 2. Columbia College 3. Chicago Downtown. We did go through some of the previous gallery shows pdf presentation. If you want to view these than let us know. We do have some grant money available for the gallery show.

First Meeting Update...

Hey everyone,

Thank to everyone who came down to the first meeting. For all those who couldn’t make it, here is the update; we went over the board members this year:

President: Libby Chappel

Vice President: Fatema Cutlerywala

Secretary: Tanvi Gandhi

Treasurer: (If anyone is interested please attend the next meeting. Also to be treasurer you must attend every meeting).

We also covered this years plan, projects, and major events. Furthermore we talked about a few upcoming events happening in AIGA–Chicago. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday September 14^th in room 259, MAC at 5:30-7pm.

In our upcoming meeting we will be talking about the first project in more detail, split ourselves into specific groups for Dzyn Bucket and talk about the Gallery show (planned for March-April).

We will talk about the upcoming year that has been planned, as well as major events.
